Let There Be…
Have you ever thought about the power of your words. The Bible says that the power of life and death is in your tongue. Now, you might think, or even say out loud, “Preacher, you don’t have a clue to what you’re saying. How in the world can my tongue kill someone or even give them life?” Well, I’m glad you asked.
Have you ever been in a good mood, and someone came into the room and said something about you, criticized you, critiqued you and that joy that you were feeling just left you in one quick instant? How about this, you worked really hard on dinner. Slaved all day making that special meal for that special someone. You know you’re not that great of a cook, but you really wanted to make this special meal. You followed the recipe. Everything tasted like it was supposed to. The plates looked amazing. You have the table set up just perfect. That special someone walks into the dining room, sees the candles, the table set so beautifully, takes their seat. You walk out and serve them their dinner. You sit down opposite them and get ready to dig in. As they start to eat their dinner you look expectantly to see if they like what they’re eating. All of the sudden they look at you and say, “Well, this is good, but I would have cooked the meat a little less. It’s a little overdone for me. And the beans have too much pepper. Also, could you pass me the salt? The potatoes are bland. But everything looks so great.”
All that hard work. All that love you put into the meal. All that joy you had in making this wonderful dish. Just vanished out the window and you sit there deflated. The power of life and death are in the tongue. You see how that can work. You can speak, “Let there be…” into someone’s life and whatever follows “be…” can either make their day or kill their joy. It can bring light or leave them in the darkness. That choice is yours by what you’re about to say.
God when He created the world said, “Hayah” That is the one word in Hebrew that we translate into “let there be.” It is a strong, active imperative God is commanding “light to become,” to come into existence. Light came into existence just like everything else in the universe. God created light.
What will you Hayah? Oh, wait, we’re not God. Well, you’re right, we’re not. But we do have the power to create. We create life and death based on what we say and how we say it. Of course, it’s more than just saying it today, isn’t it. It’s what we put online. It’s what we post on FB. It’s what we share on TikTok. It’s what we upload to Instagram. What will you let be out of your mouth? Life (light) or death (darkness)? That choice is ours. I don’t know about you, but I’d prefer to share life. There’s already enough darkness in our world today.
Share the Light of Jesus with others today. Until Next Time…Hayah!!!
