Do you remember singing that song? Maybe you’ve never sung that song. I’ve been sharing with our Praise Team and our leadership team everyday devotions through email. I take passages of Scripture and write them a little devotional and email it to them. Right now we are working through different Psalms and currently we are working on Psalm 8, one of my favorites. I wanted to share with all of you today’s devotional. It reminds us of just how much God loves us. I pray that you are reminded of His great love for you.
Scripture Reading Psalm 8:3-4
When I look at your heavens, the creation of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have set in place— what is a mortal that you remember him or the Son of Man that you take care of him?
Devotion
God loves people. Isn’t that why He created us? He wants to have a relationship with us!!! This wonderful truth moved David to exalt His name. He was amazed as he thought about God’s passion for him and all man and the grace that God gave to all of us.
As he looked into the sky, he was lost in the majesty and beauty and the glory of the heavens, revealing just how great God is. Have you ever done that? Just looked up and got lost in how great and awesome God is? David didn’t have what we have today. He didn’t have the satellites and telescopes. He didn’t have the space trips that we have taken. However, as he thought about the heavenly bodies that lit the night, he was amazed that it is all the work of God’s fingers. Meditating on this verse gives us three fascinating thoughts.
First, the setting of the stars in place by God’s fingers. Look at what gripped David’s heart. He looked up into the heavens, saw all the stars and the cosmos, realized that God had them in the palm of His hand and then purposely placed them where He wanted them. People have often said that God flung the stars into space. But that is not the way it happened. The Lord decorated the sky like you would carefully decorate your home. Each piece is orderly and purposely placed according to His good pleasure.
Second, the sculpting of the stars by God’s fingers. Like a potter forming his clay, the Lord shaped and molded the planets, stars, and meteors. Imagine every crater and canyon as the impression of God’s fingers. Set in place or Ordained (KJV) means to form or fashion. It is used of framing words with your mouth to pronounce them. Think back to the creation story, He spoke and it was. He ordained it. Now you couple that with the New Testament and Ephesians 1 and you have some shouting stuff right there baby.
Third, the simplicity of the task. Bible teacher J. Vernon McGee wrote, “It is interesting that when the Word speaks of salvation, it refers to the bared arm of the Lord: ‘Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?’ (Isaiah 53:1). But when it speaks of the creation of the heavens and the earth, it calls it His finger-work. As John Wesley put it, ‘God created the heavens and the earth and didn’t half try.’ Creation was His finger-work, like crocheting of a woman.”
Isn’t God awesome? What a privilege we have as leaders to lead in worship, to serve on the Leadership Team, and to minister to His people. What a calling and responsibility we have as well. As you go through your day today, think about how He has ordained you, set you in place, and even though the task may seem big, to Him its simple if you just trust.
Prayer
“Father, ‘when I look at your heavens, the creation of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have set in place–what is mortal that you remember him or the Son of Man that you take care of him?’ It amazes me that You thought of me. Thank You for loving me and giving me the privilege to serve. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
Have a blessed day and remember that I love all of you and hope to see you in one of our worship services.
